Tigray Conflict in Ethiopia
Since November 2020, Ethiopia’s Tigray region has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). This conflict has led to one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, with millions displaced and widespread human rights abuses, including reports of mass killings, sexual violence, and famine.
Origins of the Conflict
The conflict began on November 4, 2020, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military offensive against the TPLF after an attack on a federal military base. The TPLF had governed Ethiopia for decades before being ousted in 2018, leading to deep political tensions. The escalation quickly drew in neighboring Eritrea, adding further complexity to the war.
Impact on Civilians
The war has devastated northern Ethiopia, particularly Tigray, where over 5.2 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Nearly 2.5 million people have been internally displaced, with many fleeing to Sudan. These refugees, mostly women and children, face extreme conditions, often traveling long distances with little to no belongings. Sudan alone has received 60,000 refugees since the conflict began (UNHCR) (UN Refugees).
Access to basic services in the region has been severely disrupted. Many parts of Tigray remain without electricity, telecommunications, and banking services, further complicating humanitarian efforts. Additionally, large-scale destruction of schools and hospitals has left many without access to education or healthcare (UN News).
Humanitarian Crisis
The humanitarian situation remains critical, with over 9.4 million people requiring immediate food assistance (UNHCR). The region has experienced widespread famine-like conditions, exacerbated by a lack of access to supplies due to the conflict. Despite multiple ceasefire announcements, violence and insecurity continue to impede humanitarian efforts, leaving many areas inaccessible to aid organizations (UN News).
